I'm used to all of my Chinese colleagues warning about violence and crime, and many of them have had direct encounters with it, but I was wondering if you explained the 'laowai shield' that generally protects us inhabitants from the most overt muggings? Pickpockets and burglaries excepted, violent crime against 'obvious' foreigners are still rather scarce. of course, that may be that we don't know of them as they certainly are not publicized in the local media. But, I've had worse situations in Chicago than I have had in my 8 years here in China.
